How Wi-Fi Works: Bands, Channels, and Why Your Signal Drops

Wi-Fi feels like magic: you open a laptop, the internet is simply there, no cable in sight. Underneath, it is ordinary radio technology, the same basic physics that carries broadcast television and mobile phone calls. Your router converts the digital data from your internet connection into radio waves, and your phone or laptop listens for those waves and converts them back into data. Water absorbs Wi-Fi well, which is one reason a crowded room full of people, who are mostly water, can noticeably slow a network. Interference from other electronics on the same frequency adds to the problem.

Bandwidth is also shared. When one device streams a high-definition movie, downloads a large game, or backs up to the cloud, it consumes airtime that other devices then have to wait for. This is why a video call can stutter the moment someone else starts a big download, even though the internet plan itself has not changed.

Getting a Better Connection

A few practical steps solve most home Wi-Fi complaints. Place the router centrally and up high rather than tucked behind a television or inside a cabinet. Connect to the 5 GHz or 6 GHz band when you are near the router and want speed, and let devices fall back to 2.4 GHz for range at the far end of the house.

For larger homes, a mesh system uses several units that hand your device off from one to the next as you move around, much like mobile towers do. If many devices struggle at once, an older router may simply be the bottleneck, and upgrading to a current Wi-Fi standard can help more than any change to your internet plan. Finally, remember that the wireless hop is only the last leg of the journey. If your underlying internet service is slow, even a perfect Wi-Fi setup cannot make it faster.
