A solid-state drive has no moving parts at all. The absence of mechanical motion has sweeping consequences. An SSD can access any piece of data almost instantly, is silent, uses less power, and shrugs off the knocks that would threaten a spinning drive. This is why replacing a hard drive with an SSD is often the single most noticeable upgrade an older computer can receive.
Comparing the Two
Each type has clear strengths, which is why both are still sold.

It is worth clearing up a common worry about SSDs. Their memory cells can only be rewritten a limited number of times, which once raised fears they would wear out quickly. In practice, modern SSDs spread writes evenly across all their cells and are rated to outlast years of ordinary use, so for the vast majority of people this is not a real concern. The bigger risk with any drive remains sudden failure, which is why backups matter regardless of the technology.
