Viruses vs. Bacteria: What's the Difference?

They are both microscopic and both can make you sick, but viruses and bacteria are profoundly different kinds of things. The distinction explains why antibiotics work on one and not the other.

In everyday conversation people lump viruses and bacteria together as germs, and it is easy to see why. Both are far too small to see, both can spread from person to person, and both can cause illness. Yet biologically they belong to entirely different categories. Understanding how they differ clears up a great deal of confusion, including the common mistake of expecting antibiotics to cure a cold.

What bacteria are

Bacteria are living organisms, each made of a single cell. That cell contains the machinery of life: genetic material, structures to make proteins, and a membrane and wall enclosing everything. Given the right conditions, food, moisture, and a suitable temperature, many bacteria can grow and divide entirely on their own, doubling their numbers again and again.

Bacteria are also astonishingly widespread. They live in soil, water, deep rock, and inside and on the bodies of animals, including humans. Most are harmless or even helpful. The bacteria in your gut, for instance, help digest food and produce certain vitamins. Only a minority cause disease, and even those are living cells with their own metabolism that can, in principle, be attacked by drugs.

What viruses are

Viruses are something else entirely. A virus is essentially a small package of genetic material wrapped in a protein coat, and sometimes an outer envelope. It has no cells, no metabolism of its own, and cannot grow or reproduce by itself. On its own a virus is inert, closer to a complex chemical particle than to a living creature.

To multiply, a virus must invade a living cell and hijack that cell's machinery, forcing it to manufacture copies of the virus. Those copies burst out to infect neighboring cells, and the cycle repeats. Because viruses depend completely on a host, they are typically far smaller and simpler than bacteria, often dozens of times smaller.

Viral infections are addressed differently:

  1. Vaccines train the immune system in advance to recognize and neutralize specific viruses before they cause serious disease.
  2. Antiviral drugs, where they exist, interfere with steps in a virus's replication cycle rather than killing a cell.
  3. For many common viral illnesses, care focuses on supporting the body while its own immune system clears the infection.

Bacterial infections, by contrast, can often be treated with antibiotics chosen to match the specific bacterium, though rising resistance makes careful, appropriate use increasingly important.

The bigger picture

Both viruses and bacteria have shaped life on Earth for billions of years, and the overwhelming majority never harm us. The human body is home to trillions of bacteria that help keep us healthy, and even viruses play roles in ecosystems and evolution. The point of distinguishing them is not to fear microbes but to understand them, because knowing what you are dealing with is the first step to preventing and treating the small fraction that cause disease.
