Why Leaves Change Color in Autumn

Each autumn, forests in temperate regions put on a display of yellow, orange, and red that draws travelers from around the world. It looks like a transformation, as though the leaves are turning new colors. In reality, much of what you see was there all along, hidden beneath a curtain of green. The green that hides everything else

Leaves are green because of chlorophyll, the pigment that captures sunlight to power photosynthesis, the process by which plants make sugar from carbon dioxide and water. Chlorophyll is abundant during the growing season and so dominant that it masks the other pigments present in the leaf. Throughout spring and summer, a tree continuously produces chlorophyll to keep its food factory running.

Alongside chlorophyll, leaves also contain carotenoids, pigments that appear yellow and orange. These are the same family of compounds that color carrots and egg yolks. They are present all summer but stay invisible, drowned out by the overwhelming green.

What changes in autumn

The trigger for fall color is not cold weather itself but the shortening of daylight. As nights grow longer, trees sense the change and begin preparing for winter. A layer of cells forms at the base of each leaf stalk, gradually cutting off the flow of water and nutrients. Chlorophyll production slows and then stops, and the existing chlorophyll breaks down.

Why bother making new pigment

It may seem wasteful for a tree to produce red pigment in a leaf it is about to drop. Scientists have proposed several explanations. Anthocyanins may act as a kind of sunscreen, protecting the leaf while the tree reclaims valuable nutrients before the leaf falls. They may also deter certain insects. The exact balance of reasons likely varies by species, and this remains an area of genuine scientific curiosity.

Eventually the cell layer at the base of the leaf fully separates it from the branch, and the leaf falls. Shedding leaves protects deciduous trees from the harshness of winter, when frozen ground makes water hard to draw up and broad leaves would be vulnerable to snow and cold.

A dull brown patch may mean an early frost or drought cut the process short before the brightest colors could develop.
